Professor Postel: Post-Civil War Era Created the 'Modern United States'

UP FRONT, KPFA-FM (BERKELEY) -- Charles Postel is an American historian and professor at San Francisco State University. His latest book is Equality: An American Dilemma: 1866 – 1896.

Postel said the post-Civil War era created the modern United States.

“The world we live in was forged then,” he said. “For me this is an era of tremendous tumult. This is the era of war and revolution ... and counter-revolution after the war, and and of tremendous social mobilization.”
