YAHOO! SPORTS/NFL NETWORK -- Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Zach Banner and Professor of Jewish Studies at San Francisco State University Marc Dollinger discuss how Black Lives Matter and Jewish communities can work together.
Dollinger noted that the Black Lives Matter movement has helped American Jewish communities acknowledge its members of color, who comprise 12 to 15 percent of the country’s Jewish population.
“As the nation has been reckoning with racism and systemic racism, white American Jews have been reckoning with the way in which we have — not only on a national scene, but also in our own communities — been marginalizing and been biasing against Jews of color,” said Dollinger, SF State’s Richard and Rhoda Goldman Chair in Jewish Studies and Social Responsibility.
“... There is, I think, the beginnings of what could be a new alliance between white Jews, African Americans, Black Jews,” Dollinger added, “in that, sadly, the forces that are coming to bear to create racism are also, in many cases, the same forces that are coming to bear on anti-Semitism.”
