Overview

SAG-AFTRA is partnering with San Francisco State on a broadcast news career workshop Saturday, April 11 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in Marcus Hall 224.

We have panels on “Working Behind the Scenes,” where we’ll discuss those jobs behind the scenes that are critical to the success of any newsroom. “The Business of the Business” will challenge the myth of the ‘glamour’ of broadcast journalism and we’ll explore the ins and outs of employment contracts and collective bargaining agreements. The final panel is “How to Get a Job” which will explore what steps students should take while still in school to increase their chances of being hired after graduation. We’ll also discuss how AI impacts jobs and broadcast journalism in general.

Registration is free and we’ll serve lunch. Deadline to register is April 8th for accurate food head count. It is open to all Bay Area universities and community colleges.

Event Highlights:

  • Panel 1 (10 a.m.) Behind the Scenes: There’s a lot more to radio and television than being a reporter and anchor. Find out about the jobs behind the scenes that help make a newscast successful.
  • Panel 2 (11:30 a.m.) “The Glamour” of the Business: Waking up before daylight, waiting for a story in the rain, negotiating a personal service contract. Industry professionals will offer a reality check on the life of a broadcast journalist.
  • Panel 3 (2:00 p.m.) Getting Your First Job: Hiring managers will offer tips on what students can do while still in school to increase their chances of getting their first job.

Featured Panelists include representatives from KTVU, KPIX, KSEE, KFSN, KQED, and Total Traffic & Weather Network.
