The hills are alive with the sound of Black music! Experience the songs from one of the most beloved American musical classics as reimagined through an Afrofuturistic lens, led by a dynamic group of musicians and vocalists, including Brianna Thomas, Chareene Wade, Vuyo Sotashe, and more. 

The uplifting spirit of Black roots music ripples through this production, curated by jazz vocalist Michael Mwenso and producer Jono Gasparro in association with Electric Root. Conceived as a central production within a platform to create a creative healing space for a troupe of predominantly BIPOC artists, the community engagement behind this follows the same intention behind previous tours — ‘HARLEM 100’ & ‘WE SHALL OVERCOME.’

LCA Lives welcomes World Hip Hop Ensemble, Audiopharmacy, to our first main stage production for our Live In Concert series. Audiopharmacy will bring to the stage a multimedia musical performance combining live World Hip-Hop/Soul/Jazz with global musical genres, turntablism, movement, and visual projection fused together to cultivate healing and unity and inspire change. This ensemble of SF State alumni is made up of multicultural community artists with roots indigenous to Turtle Island (North America), Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, South America, India, and Europe. Their unique sound is eclectic + avant-garde, yet rooted in the voice of the people and Mama Earth. By intricately fusing turntablism, live instrumentation, global musical styles, poetic lyricism, and indigenous prayers, Audiopharmacy elevates the meaning, sound, and purpose of World Hip Hop.

In Roots of Fire, a group of musicians honors the rich history and cultural legacy of Cajun music. The genre's contemporary scene in Louisiana has found mainstream success with Grammy Award nominations and wins, but shuttering venues and aging fans leave some questioning the music’s longevity. Featuring electrifying performances, this vibrant documentary examines the intersection between music and preserving tradition for future generations. We’re excited to welcome back to the SF State campus, SF State Alumni who have curated this beautiful film.

LCA Live & Audiopharmacy invite you to McKenna Theatre on Wednesday, April 12th to catch a free movie screening followed by a live talkback with Audiopharmacy, who was a part of the cultural performance created for Groundworks at Alcatraz on Indigenous Peoples Day. GROUNDWORKS, from Audiopharmacy, profiles the California Native co-creators of “Groundworks”—a dance performance on Alcatraz Island commemorating San Francisco’s first official Indigenous People’s Day. The performance took place nearly 50 years after the Indians of All Tribes occupied Alcatraz and first brought attention to Native American rights.

This Pop/Folk singer/songwriter has toured out of Nashville, Los Angeles, Denver, and Miami after graduating from Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship. She is a genre-defying 21st-century talent with a lot on her mind!

SF-based saxophonist STEVEN LUGERNER continues his explorations of the music of jazz legend Jackie McLean with JACKNIFE, a hard-hitting West Coast post-bop quintet. Exploring tunes from McLean’s seminal early and mid-1960s Blue Note albums, Jacknife brings together a formidable cast of rising talent including trumpeter MAX MILLER-LORAN, drummer BEN ESPOSITO, bassist JULIAN ESPARZA and pianist MICHAEL POTTER.

Since 2016, JACKNIFE has been a staple of the San Francisco jazz scene with regular performances at SFJAZZ Center, BLACK CAT, and THE SOUND ROOM, plus residencies at CLUB DELUXE and MR. TIPPLES. Members of the group have worked with a heavyweight roster of jazz masters, including drum legends ALBERT “TOOTIE” HEATH and BILLY HART, pianists LARRY WILLIS, FRED HERSCH and MYRA MELFORD, trumpeter RALPH ALESSI, and saxophonist DAYNA STEPHENS.

Kick off the semester with free tacos and music! Led by saxophonist Steven Lugerner, this ensemble performs inventive music that blurs the lines between pop, rhythm & blues, jazz improvisation & minimalism. An expert on a daunting menagerie of wind instruments including various clarinets and saxophones, the Burlingame-raised multi-instrumentalist earned international attention with 2011’s These Are the Words and 2013’s Hebrew liturgy-inspired suite For We Have Heard, albums featuring an all-star quartet with pianist Myra Melford, drummer Matt Wilson and trumpeter Darren Johnston.
